Dr. Benjamin F. Sheftall was born and grew up in Gaffney, South Carolina. His education began in the Gaffney public schools. He attended The University of Richmond, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He advanced his studies at Bowman Gray School of Medicine part of Wake Forest University in the field of microbiology. From there he went to Charleston, South Carolina where he entered The Medical University of South Carolina School of Dentistry, graduating in 1975. While at The University of Richmond, Dr. Sheftall met the girl he would marry. He and his wife, Kay, raised their two daughters in Charleston, and are now grandparents of two granddaughters who live in Virginia.
Dr. Sheftall opened his dental practice in Charleston in 1975, and continued there as a private practioner for the next twenty-eight years. His patients loved him, giving him the nickname “Gentle Ben”. Following those years of private practice, Dr. Sheftall continued his professional career as an associate provider in a number of dental practices in South Carolina. From 2005 – 2019, he was an entrepreneur, owning and managing seven dental practices in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. It was during this time that Dr. Sheftall realized he was missing his true calling, the practice of dentistry. The contact with his patients, the high standard of application of his skills and knowledge as a dentist, the daily pace of the office, the continuing education – all the things he had enjoyed for the many years of being in practice himself led him to return to that arena once again.
Dr. Sheftall is a lifetime member of The American Dental Association, a lifetime member of the South Carolina Dental Association, the Coastal Dental Society, and the Charleston Dental Society. He loves golf, English antique automobiles, college basketball – with a special fondness for the College of Charleston Cougars – reading, movies, and time with his family.
