LIFE IN NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA
While no one could mistake Newberry for a major metropolis, this friendly town has a lot to offer. Newberry is the jewel of the South Carolina Midlands, a well-preserved historic location, a cultural center, and the home of Bela Family Dentistry of Newberry. Don’t let the size fool you. There are plenty of interesting opportunities for fun in Newberry, and here is the proof.
1. SEE A LIVE SHOW AT THE NEWBERRY OPERA HOUSE.
Built in 1881, the opera house is just one example of Newberry’s historic architecture. When first constructed, the Newberry Opera House saw double duty as a municipal building and an entertainment venue. Today, the opera house is dedicated solely to performances. Grab your family or friends and see live theater, music ranging from country to modern rock, or a round-table discussion of current issues in a beautiful setting.
2. TAKE A CLASS AT THE NEWBERRY ARTS CENTER.
Not all of Newberry is centuries old. For example, the Newberry Arts Center was established in 2014. The center is not only about showcasing the talents of professional artists, but it is also open for amateurs to learn. Have you ever wanted to try pottery or painting? Now is your chance. Also, you can book the arts center for private parties.
3. TAKE A STROLL THROUGH A JAPANESE GARDEN.
You may not expect to find a Japanese-style garden in the Midlands, but Newberry has an exemplary one—the Wells Japanese Garden. Here, you can find examples of traditional Japanese architecture and enjoy a relaxing afternoon admiring the temple, tea house, and other features. The garden is located in the heart of downtown Newberry.
4. TASTE SOME BARBEQUE IN THE SPRING.
Any city worth its salt has at least one food festival, and Newberry certainly meets this requirement. Barbeque lovers will go crazy for Pork in the Park, Newberry’s annual BBQ competition. You’ll enjoy live music, delicious food, and—best of all—free admission.
Not a pork lover? Not a problem. Beef, chicken, sausage, and more are also on the menu. If you have confidence in your barbequing abilities, why not enter the competition? The grand prize is $600. That’ll buy a lot of ribs.
5. SHOW OFF YOUR GREEN AT THE IRISH FLING.
Another spring festival that Newberry offers is the Newberry Irish Fling. Held near St. Patrick’s Day, the fling is a celebration of Newberry’s Irish heritage as well as an excellent excuse to indulge in Irish food and drink. Of course, there is always live music and even a leprechaun scavenger hunt for the kids. Put on your finest green clothes and come out for fun.
6. SAMPLE NEWBERRY’S FLAVORS.
What’s that? You want another spring food festival? Newberry has you covered with A Taste of Newberry. This event is held in May and also features free admission. You can try a range of foods, beer, and wine, accompanied by local bands. You’ll find many regional favorites here like crab cakes and wine from nearby vineyards.
7. SIP SOME LOCAL VINTAGES.
Speaking of wine, Newberry has its own vineyard, Enoree River Vineyards and Winery. Good American wine isn’t limited to only the Napa Valley. At Enoree River, you can participate in a wine tasting as well as purchase wines by the glass or bottle. This is the ideal setting for a date or romantic rendezvous. The vineyards are also available as a venue for weddings, birthday celebrations, and more.
8. LEARN ABOUT ORCHIDS.
Are you a botanical enthusiast? Then you must visit Carter and Holmes Orchids. They are a well-respected orchid supplier who has been in business for decades. Offering more than just orchids and supplies, Carter and Holmes gives tours of their facilities and greenhouses. They even conduct introductory orchid gardening workshops for those wishing to learn more about these unique flowers.
9. TAKE IN SOME HISTORY AT THE OLD COURTHOUSE.
Constructed in the mid-nineteenth century, Newberry’s Old Courthouse now serves as the city’s visitor center. This edifice is a magnificent piece of Greek Revival architecture. The courthouse is also the site of the city’s annual summer soiree. Hosted by the Southern Victorian Society, the soiree is a formal event where guests are dressed in antebellum attire. Don’t worry—dance lessons are available.
10. STRETCH YOUR LEGS AMONG WILDLIFE.
Technically, it’s not in Newberry, but the Belfast Wildlife Management Area is less than a half-hour drive away from the city. You can hike to your heart’s content through these woodlands, catching sight of white-tailed deer and many unique birds. The area is also home to a historic plantation house from the 18th century. This is the perfect spot for a family outing, a picnic for two, or a solitary stroll.
ONE MORE THING.
Did you think we would close this list without another festival? Newberry was mainly settled by newcomers from the British Isles, but German immigrants also played a large part in the town’s history. This role is reflected in Newberry’s Oktoberfest, a huge celebration of all things German. Food, biergartens (beer gardens), activities for the kinder (children)—you’ll find it all here. There is even a classic car show.
Just make sure that you make an appointment at Bela Family Dentistry of Newberry for your cleaning after all that eating.
